Electrical Safety

  • Before working on a computer make sure that it is disconnected from the power supply.
    • Hold the power button for a few seconds after it is disconnected to completely drain the computer.
  • Electrostatic shock
    • Occurs from static that is on your body or clothes being released into a circuit when you touch it.
  • To prevent electrical shock wear an anti-static wristband when working on computers.
    • Wear the wristband tight on your wrist and clip the other end onto a grounded object.

High Voltage Device Safety

  • Most PC circuits are low voltage/low current
  • There are some exceptions
    • Power supplies
    • Laser printers
  • Never open units that have high voltage warnings unless you are trained to do so.
